A weekend trip to the Bodensee

In July we spent a weekend near the Bodensee in Southern Germany.  It's a beautiful place with a lot to do in the area.   The lake is bordered by Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  We only stayed in Germany, but it would be great to go back and explore some other areas. We stayed at a Ferienhof which is a "holiday farm."  They are working farms that offer apartments and/or rooms to rent.  We had a great little apartment complete with a loft, which the kiddos loved!  It had a nice outdoor area with riding toys and chairs to relax in.  The kids loved the animals (and we did too!).

After we arrived on Friday we went to visit the Affenburg Salem which is home to over 200 freely roaming monkeys.  This was by far one of our favorite things we have done here yet!  After being given instructions each person gets a handful of popcorn to feed the monkeys.  The walkways are lined with wooden beams which the monkeys sit on.  If they want popcorn they have to sit on them.  You can't feed them otherwise and the monkeys know this.  You simply walk up to one and offer them one piece of popcorn with your hand flat and they reach out and take it.  The kids loved it, although we had to keep a close eye on them cause they (mostly Ian) wanted to run right up to each one.

This one is a video, which will hopefully work!  Check out the monkey's face at the end when he thinks Valerie is sitting too close!

On Saturday we took a ferry to Mainau Island, a beautiful island known for its millions of flowers.  You can spend the day there walking around, there is a large play area for kids, a petting zoo, cafes, etc.  Valerie got to ride a pony there and Ian enjoyed feeding some goats.  There was also a butterfly house which was really neat.  The butterflies fly all around and often land on you.  The kids enjoyed it and were troopers walking all around the Island.

Auf Wiedersehen!
